Ricardo Villalobos’ first release for Luciano’s Cadenza imprint sees another deeply engrossing development of sound, fofrever moving away from “minimal” with increasingly deep, complex rhythmic structures and the kind of subtle melodic shifts that classics are made of. Instead of techno’s conventional 4- and 8- and 16-bar figures, the tracks on this doublepack create their own time signatures, sounding like careful edits lifted from Villalobos’ spiraling live sessions, where loops uncoil into long, slinky springs. This is a brilliantly moody record – contemplative, melancholy, sometimes emphasizing an all-encompassing psychedelia reminiscent of Krautrock, the Chilean progressive folk/rock of Los Jaivas, and even Southeast Asian string music. Highly recommended.
